High Commissioner Mr. Tareque Muhammad entered the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1999. During his diplomatic career, he was stationed both at the Head Quarters and Missions abroad as he rose through the hierarchy. He worked at various capacities in Madrid, New Delhi, Kathmandu and Yangon. Before arriving in Nairobi, he was Consul General of Bangladesh in Los Angeles.

Beyond working in bilateral ambience, he has experience of working in multilateral setting as the Director (Bangladesh) to the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Kathmandu, Nepal (2011-2014). He was also the Deputy Ambassador in Yangon Myanmar (2014-2017). As Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka (2017-2019), he was deeply involved in managing two very vital issues namely the Rohingya crisis and Bangladesh’s bilateral relations with South Asian countries.

He has special interests in South and South Asian affairs, Rohingya issue, regional cooperation, global environmental governance, regional connectivity etc. He believes in diplomacy that works for creating a better and peaceful future for all the citizens of the world.

He obtained a Master Degree in International Studies from the Leeds University UK as a Chevening Scholar (2001). Earlier he had obtained MBA from Dhaka University’s Institute of Business Administration, the premier institution of the country (1995). His first University degree is in Forestry and Environmental Science from Chittagong University in Bangladesh (1992). He started government service with a brief career in the Forest Department of Bangladesh (1995-1999) before switching to Bangladesh Foreign Service.

High Commissioner Tareque Muhammad is married, and has two children.  In his spare time, he likes to read, travel and spend time with his family.
